‘Dogs walk off vs. North Dakota and Montana in Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif.Hayleigh Galvan hit a walk off 2-run home run to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 win over North Dakota and Fresno State scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete an 8-0 run-rule win over Montana as the ‘Dogs picked up a pair of walk off victories on the second day of the Bulldog Classic.

Pitching as a Bulldog in Margie Wright Diamond for the first time, freshman Danielle Lung picked up the win in both games on Friday as she threw a scoreless inning in relief in the opener vs. North Dakota (9-12) then allowed just two hits and had a team season-high 13 strikeouts in throwing her first career shutout against Montana (5-17). Fresno State (11-6) has won five straight games and is 3-0 thus far in the Bulldog Classic.

The Bulldogs hit three home runs on Friday as Kelcey Carrasco and Vanessa Hernandez both went deep in the Montana game. Hernandez was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored against the Griz and had an RBI double against North Dakota. Hitting in the leadoff spot, freshman McKenzie Wilson hit 5-for-6 with two walks over the two games, reaching base in seven of her eight plate appearances while also stealing four bases and scoring two runs.

How it Happened – vs. North Dakota
Fresno State jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning but North Dakota was able to fight its way back. Wilson led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second, and scored on a groundout from Galvan. Rachel Minogue had a two-out single and Hernandez doubled her home (watch), then after Jade Nua was hit by a pitch Schuylar Broussard doubled through the left side to bring in Hernandez and put the ‘Dogs up 3-0 (watch).

UND got two runs back in the top of the second as the Fighting Hawks began the inning with consecutive singles and, after a sacrifice, both runners would score on a Bulldog fielding error. The Bulldogs threatened in the home half of the second and again in the fourth but couldn’t add on, and in the top of the fifth Deja Miller tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a Jocelyn Kirk sacrifice fly to tie the game.

After a scoreless sixth inning UND had a leadoff single to start the top of the seventh. Lung came in and set down the next three hitters to keep the game tied, and in the bottom of the seventh Wilson reached for the fourth time in the game with a leadoff single. After a bunt moved her to second, Galvan ended a six-pitch at-bat with a line shot home run to center field to win the game (watch).

How it Happened – vs. Montana
Lung struck out the last batter she faced in the North Dakota game and continued that momentum against Montana, striking out the side in the first inning (watch). The ‘Dogs loaded the bases with none out on two singles and a walk in the bottom of the first but the Griz turned a double play and got a fly out to escape with the game still scoreless.

Lung added another strikeout in a scoreless top of the second, and in the bottom half Carrasco hit her first home run as a Bulldog with a solo shot to left center (watch). The ‘Dogs would load the bases again with two out but Montana was able to strand three runners. The ‘Dogs added a second run in the third inning as Hernandez had a one-out double and scored on an RBI single from Nua (watch).

The Griz had a leadoff double in the fourth but Lung struck out the next three batters and had two more strikeouts in the fifth. Hernandez led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, Nua walked, and Carrasco put the Bulldogs up 3-0 with an RBI single up the middle (watch).

Lung struck out two more batters in a perfect top of the 6th. In the home half Miranda Rohleder walked, Kaitlyn Jennings had a bunt single, and Minogue drove in the fourth Bulldog run with a single (watch). Hernandez followed with a 3-run blast to left center to make it 7-0 (watch), and after Nua was hit by a pitch Emily Brodner drove her in with a pinch-hit double to end the game (watch).

Notable
  • Lung’s 13 strikeouts were the most by a Bulldog since Danielle East struck out 15 in her no-hitter against New Mexico last season. They were the second-most strikeouts by Montana in a game in program history (the program began in 2015).
  • Lung has recorded 22 strikeouts in her last two starts (both Bulldog run-rule wins in six innings) after she punched out nine last Saturday against UT San Antonio.
  • Hernandez has driven in multiple runs in five of the last six Bulldog games, hitting 11-for-21 (.524) with three home runs, five doubles, and 13 RBIs over the last six contests with a 1.190 slugging percentage.
  • The Bulldogs have won every game this year in which they’ve held a lead.
