Rodney Terry compares UTEP’s bad season to the situation when he first came to Fresno State

Local Sports

While Fresno State is getting ready for the Mountain West Conference Tournament, UTEP was so bad this season the Miners failed to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament.

In Rodney Terry’s first season, UTEP finished with a record of 8-21 (3-15 C-USA). The Miners did not win a single road game this season for the first time in 16 years.

“Any time you come in, you’re hired, I think I was hired March the 11th, it’s not like you’re gonna go out and get you some thoroughbreds and bring in here that,” explained Terry. “I don’t know, I look back at the experience I had when I was at Fresno State. I came into a pretty much a JV team in the spring and similar situation here. Came in here and looked at the team, looking for where’s the varsity? We got the JV we’re working with right now. You gotta go build a varsity. Okay so that’s what we’ve had to do here.

On Tuesday, two UTEP players announced they are transferring. One of them, Evan Gilyard, was the Miners’ leading scorer this past season.
