Edison senior Dezjhon Malone is full of personality.
“Dezjhon is really loose,” said Edison head football coach Atnaf Harris.
“I’m the best dancer on this team,” joked Malone.
And he isn’t lacking for confidence.
“I’m charming,” added Malone. “I know how to make someone feel nice, especially the ladies.”
The Edison cornerback is the the latest in a long line of great Edison defensive backs that have included NFL names like Tim and T.J. McDonald and Ricky Manning Jr.
“Sometimes you can’t explain it,” said Harris. “There are things that Dezjhon does that you can’t coach.”
Like how Dezjhon was blessed with a 6 foot 2 inch, 185-pound frame, that can run the 40-yard dash in around 4.5 seconds.
“I feel like I’m just a natural almost,” said Malone. “It’s just something that I’ve always been good at.”
Dezjhon’s skills were groomed early by the late Tony Perry, the former Edison secondary coach known as the “DB Guru.”
Younger Dez, as his teammates call him, was more focused on offense, until Perry watched Malone get a pick six in his first game as a high school freshman.
“He (Perry) was watching the game and he came to me, and he was like ‘listen man, you’re going to be a DB’, and from there on, I just stuck with it,” said Malone.
Dez also has offers from the likes of Oregon State and BYU, but when Fresno State defensive backs coach J.D. Williams called him at practice one day back in May, Malone decided to follow his gut and give his commitment to the Bulldogs.
“Coach J.D. called,” said Malone. “I was like, ‘yeah man, I’m in.'”
