High Altitude Training

Road to the Olympics

The Olympic training center located in Colorado Springs is home to some of the best athletes in the country as they prepare for the Olympic games. One huge benefit of having the training center in Colorado is the altitude which sets at just above a mile high at the Olympic training center.

“Your blood is less saturated with oxygen, you’re breathing harder, and for an athlete their ability to train and perform is impaired when they are at altitude.” said Sr. Sports Physiologist Randy Wilber.

Now one of the huge benefits in living at high altitude is your body naturally creates more red blood cells, which leads to more oxygen in the body. What’s interesting with that logic is one might believe that they do all their training at high altitudes, but that actually isn’t the case, thanks to a state of the art altitude training center that allows them to adjust the rooms altitude, temperature, and humidity. It exactly resembles Rio De Janeiro.

“By living high they get that increase in red blood cells, but by training low they are able to run faster, swim faster, cycle faster  then they would normally be able to do if they were living at  natural altitude location.” said Wilber.
