‘Vindictive and malicious’: PG&E customers react to the Public Safety Power Shutoff


SAN FRANCISCO (KGPE) – For a second night, PG&E is turning out the lights on thousands of homes and businesses around the state.

The goal is to reduce the threat of wildfires due to equipment malfunctions coupled with strong winds.

The energy supplier is hoping to avoid a repeat of last year when defective power equipment was blamed for a number of fires, including one that claimed 85 lives.

“This really is unprecedented for both PG&E and the state and it’s really important we partner with not only state local and county agencies, but also with our customers so we’re going to try to learn from this event,” said PG&E’s Lynsey Paulo.

But the people impacted by the public safety blackouts are less understanding of the power shutoff.

“I think that PG&E is just being vindictive and malicious,” said impacted resident Rich Hoden.

“How many people are losing products from their refrigerator how long are they going to have this off?”

That question is being asked by many across Northern California. PG&E says the power could be out for several days depending on weather conditions in the areas affected.
