The Boys and Girls Club in Oakhurst were cleaning up the mess Friday morning after vandals destroyed their garden.
Kobe Simmons and other club members spent most of their summer break tending to this garden but sometime Thursday evening, someone decided to destroy their hard work.
“Before we can even harvest them,(vegetables) they’ve been destroyed,” Simmons said.
The club posted the damage on their Facebook page asking the community to be on the look out for these vandals.
Simmons said it hurts the club members who have been trying to take care of the garden only to have someone wreck it.
Doug Macaulay, board chair of Mountain Area Youth Organization told Your Central Valley this was set back for them but the kids were able to salvage some of the plants.
“The kids have not got it back to where it looks like a garden again but the fruits of all their labor so to speak, their vegetables of their labor basically were destroyed,” he said.
In June, Your Central Valley reported about the Boys and Girls Club Oakhurst was closing for the summer and possibly for good because there wasn’t enough money to run the program.
“We’re on the right path maybe a little slower than we would have liked,” he said.
The club will need about $75,000 to re-open the program, they’re about half ways there with $35,000 raised so far.
Macaulay said the club has about 8 more fundraiser already planned and he hopes with the money raised so far they could re-open after Labor Day.
