MERCED, California (KSEE/KGPE) – Authorities are investigating the attempted kidnapping of a University of California, Merced student.
This happened Tuesday in the 3800 block of San Jose Avenue around 1:40 p.m.
The victim in the attempted kidnapping is a young woman, a UC Merced student.
UC Merced Police say the woman was walking when she saw three Hispanic men wearing black ski masks sitting a vehicle.
One suspect approached her and covered her face in some type of material.
The second suspect picked up her feet and together they moved the woman toward their vehicle.
The woman fought off the suspects and was able to escape.
Students on campus are feeling uneasy about the whole situation.
“It does make one think twice before just walking around our neighborhood, which again, usually college students we don’t think twice,” said Jesica Lopez, a student at UC Merced.
“I’m not going to be going out late,” added student Abigail DeRosas. “Because usually we like walking around but probably not going to do that anymore.”
Police are still trying to verify the women’s report but say they have no reason to not believe her.
“We’re re-contacting her, we’re out interviewing other witnesses and seeing if there’s any other evidence we may be able to gather, whether it’s surveillance or any other people that may have been witness to this,” said Sergeant Ray alvarez with the Merced Police Department.
Police said they don’t believe that student was being targeted and there have been no other similar calls reported to UC Merced Police or Merced Police.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call Merced Police at 209-385-6905 or UC Merced Police at 209-228-2677.
