SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Tourists with plans to vacation in Mexico for spring break are urged to take extra precautions as a new Security Alert has been issued by the U.S. Embassy.
In an alert issued Wednesday, the Embassy warns that tourists could face dangers including medical emergencies, drowning, unregulated alcohol, and sexual assault, even in resort areas.
“U.S. citizens have reported incidents of rape and sexual assault in some resort areas. Perpetrators may target inebriated or isolated individuals,” officials say in the alert.
Travelers are advised to make sure your health insurance plan is valid in Mexico.
Additionally, tourists should drink responsibly and know all drinking companions, as well as stay in a group of friends during outings.
Despite the alert, officials say “the vast majority of travelers have safe and enjoyable trips.”
