Actor Morgan Freeman is being lauded on social media for his decision to convert his 124-acre ranch in Mississippi into a sanctuary for bees, Forbes reported.

According to the business magazine, the Shawshank Redemption actor has imported 26 bee hives into his ranch from Arkansas.

The 81-year-old also planted lavender and magnolia trees to attract more bees to his home.

In an appearance on Jimmy Fallon in 2014, Freeman explained his foray into beekeeping.

“There’s a concerted effort to bring bees back onto the planet. We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation,” Freeman said at the time.

The actor said he’s never worn a suit or hat to protect himself from bees and has never been stung.

“They haven’t [stung me] yet, because right now I’m not trying to harvest honey or anything,” he added. “I’m just feeding them… I think they understand, ‘Hey, don’t bother this guy, he’s got sugar water here.’”

“There’s been a frightening loss of bee colonies, particularly in this county,” Freeman said in another interview with Larry King. “To such an extent that the scientists are now saying ‘this is dangerous.’”

Once his interview with Fallon began recirculating, many took to Twitter to praise Freeman for saving bees.
