There’s a new place to buy fresh produce in the Tower District!

The Market in the Tower District opened Thursday in the parking lot of Detentions Billiards on Olive Avenue.

Organizers said the new farmers market will provide the area with much needed healthy produce.

“Knowing that this is part of a food desert and the Valley grows most of the fruits and vegetables for the entire country but we have the least access to those fruits and vegetables,” said Anthony Ayodele.

Ayodele hopes the farmers market will showcase the Tower District as more than a nightlife hot spot but a family friendly neighborhood with access to healthy foods.

“If you do want that kind of stuff you are going to go out of the area and you’re going to spend a lot more, a premium on that food. A farmers market is a great way for farmers and people in the community to come together,” said Ayodele.

Organizers said about 200 people showed up for the market’s first day, which they hope will grow as more people become aware.

The Market in the Tower District will happen every Thursday from 11 to 2 in the Detention Billiards parking lot on Olive Avenue.
