Fresno police say within the last roughly 30 days, there have been 20 reports of garage burglaries in Northwest Fresno. That’s up from the previous month which only had four.
“We should be able to leave things in our cars, we should be able to lock it with things secure but unfortunately, in today’s society we just can’t,” said Captian Burke Farrah.
Cpt. Farrah says you should not only remove valuables from your car but also take your garage door opener with you when you exit your car.
“When they find those unlocked vehicles, they often find keys to the car, keys to the house or usually a garage door opener. they will activate the garage door opener and clean out the garage,” said Cpt. Farrah.
He says some people are choosing to keep their car unlocked, that way if a thief does come by, they won’t have to pay the price of a shattered window.
“We know the crooks are out there looking for an easy score and if the vehicle is locked they are likely to move on to the next one and not bother your car,” said Cpt. Farrah.
Eddie Pascual lives in Northwest Fresno and says his neighbors have been hit by thieves in the past.
“We watch out for each other if we see that my neighbor left his garage door open because it’s inviting if you see a garage door open so we call each other,” said Pascual.
Fresno Ag Hardware manager Vang Vu says many stores, like theirs, sell garage door openers that can attach to your keys.
“A lot of times the visor clips are very convenient and people tend to keep them in the vehicles but that would just make it a target for theft,” said Vu.
If you do see something suspicious in your neighborhood call police immediately. They also rely on home security video to help catch suspects.
“It’s important to me it’s important to my family, my neighbors and my officers too, they live here as well and we want to take care of this problem, we want to solve it,” said Cpt. Farrah.
