Are electric scooters making their way back to Fresno?

FRESNO, California (KGPE) – Electric scooters could soon return to the streets of Fresno. The city council unanimously voted Thursday to approve a six-month pilot program with scooter company, Lime.

The scooters will be restricted in several locations, like Fresno State, Fresno City College and Fashion Fair.

More than a year ago, e-scooter company, Bird, tried to bring in their scooters, but it failed after they didn’t obtain proper licensing.

“I think it’s going to be a positive thing, we are seeing bigger cities throughout the state and throughout the nation adopting a regulatory framework to make sure it addresses the safety concerns other folks may have,” said council member Esmeralda Soria for district 1.

Though not allowed on campus, Fresno State students say the scooters could eliminate commute times.

“Some of the students who live farther in the dorms or apartment complexes a little farther down it might be a better way for them to get here,” said student Satyana Rye.

Helmets are required and scooters will only be allowed on the road, preferably in bike lanes.

“We have a flagship first ride academy we will bring to town and educate people in real-time how to operate them operate them safely and we give away helmets in the process,” said Katie Stevens, Senior Director of Government Relations for Lime.

Representatives for Lime say they now have the green light to apply for a permit. They hope to have the 500 scooters on the ground by the end of October.
