FRESNO, California – A local celebrity is working to catch criminals in the act and hopes more people in the community step up too.
Some people may have seen singer Timmy Torres, better known as “Timmy T” riding his Segway around town. The Fresno native burned up the charts in 1991 with his number one single “One More Try.”
Now when he’s not making music, he’s on a different beat. His scooter is equipped with a dash cam he keeps rolling. He said it’s constantly catching criminals in the act.
On Tuesday his camera caught him confronting a suspected shoplifter coming out of a River Park store.
“Did you steal that?” he asked the man.
“As I was getting off my scooter I noticed a man run out of Bed, Bath and Beyond with a package under his left arm, and it was a big box and the alarm was going off,” Torres said.
He followed him to his car, with his camera recording, and grabbed clear shots of his face while also taking down his license plate number.
“Quite honestly I see theft a couple times a week,” Torres said.
The number is too high for him, so he actively tries to curb criminal activity by stopping them in the act or providing video to law enforcement.
“I don’t even think about my safety. It’s just an instinct. I wish more people would get involved,” Torres said.
He made headlines before in 2016 when he broke up a fight between two women on Fruit Ave. He said he can’t just sit back and watch, and believes others shouldn’t either.
“I think (crime) would happen less and less if more people would just speak out. When they see something happen don’t be afraid to call the police, take down a license plate, do what you have to do. Because this is our community and we need to keep it safe,” he said.
