HANFORD, Calif. - A Hanford family is mourning the death of their three-year-old son. Kings County deputies say the toddler drowned in a pool late Thursday afternoon. The drowning happened behind a home on Hanford Armona Road near Highway 43.
Kings County deputies and Kings County Fire responded to a report of a drowning victim at about 5 p.m. Thursday. After attempting CPR, medics rushed the child to Adventist Medical Center.
Staff did all they could to save the boy's life but pronounced him dead about an hour later. Deputies say the parents, other adults and at least one child were with the three-year-old before the boy left the parents' sight for just minutes.
Deputies say the child's mother found him in the pool. Both parents performed CPR immediately and then called 911.
"This area is a rural area in Kings County Southeast of Hanford. It's a rather large property with the house that sits in the front towards the road with a backyard. In the backyard there's a pool. It's fenced and behind the fence there's a shop and typically the children play in the backyard. They go back and forth between the house and the shop," said Commander Mark Bevens of the Kings County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say no one else was in the pool when the child wandered off. An autopsy on the victim is scheduled.
