A domestic violence dispute turns deadly. Fresno Police say a 40-year-old man shot and killed the mother of his child before taking his own life.
They say it happened just after 8 o’clock Saturday morning, near Kings Canyon Road and Armstrong Avenue.
We spoke with a neighbor who did not want to show her face or use her name on camera. She tells us those that live in their neighborhood knew the couple had problems, but she says she never thought this would happen.
On Saturday, yellow crime type surrounded this neighborhood.
A neighbor says the couple in this house fought often, so she did not think twice when a police officer showed up.
“I thought oh maybe he’s going to talk to her because they had problems before,” says the neighbor.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said they received a call from the victim’s mother, saying that her daughter (the victim) was on the phone with her sister when he says the sister heard screaming over the phone and then the phone went dead.
Dyer says when officers arrived they discovered a 26-year-old woman lying in a bedroom shot in her upper body.
“Officers than began to canvas the neighborhood looking for the suspect in this case,” Dyer says.
The suspect, police say is the victim’s spouse, a 40-year-old man.
Dyer says he was found just one block away, running from officers and holding a handgun against his temple.
“He placed it up to his head fired one round and took his own life,” Dyer explained.
He added, the suspect did this in front of his officers and they rushed to his aid to try and save him but could not.
Video shows the gun on the ground.
Dyer says the murder, turned suicide, is a result of domestic violence restraining order that was granted to the victim on Friday, by the courts.
He says the victim took their one-year-old to a babysitter and was there at the time of the incident.
Dyer says the victim was at their house when the man showed up.
“There was some type of an argument and for whatever reason he pulled out a handgun and shot and killed her,” he says.
He says the couple was on and off for 10 years.
Neighbors heartbroken for the child the couple left behind. “She ain’t going to see her parents and her mom, especially,” says the neighbor.
Police say the child is OK. They say the victim was also a foster parent to a significant amount of children in Fresno.
Officer did not say how many the victim fostered, but say they were going to try and contact them.
We also learned that the victim was a nurse at Saint Agnes Hospital.
