Tesla driver caught ‘sleeping’ while on busy freeway by former Fresno councilmember

News

Former Fresno Councilmember Clint Olivier caught a startling moment on a busy freeway.

A man appeared to be asleep behind the wheel on the 1-5 Freeway with his Tesla in self-driving mode.

Olivier said he was in the Los Angeles area with his wife and kid visiting family when he saw the shocking sight.

“I haven’t checked the DMV manuel but I’m guessing it’s illegal to sleep while driving a car,” he said.

Olivier said he was checking his surroundings and glanced over and saw the man. He asked his wife to grab her phone and start recording.

“It was really incredible to see a person sleeping behind the wheel of a car going 75 miles per hour,” Olivier said.

According to Tesla’s website:

“Autopilot is intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any time.”

Olivier said they drove beside the sleeping man for about 45 seconds, before the video appears to show the man finally waking up, looking startled and grabbing the wheel.

“We didn’t call the CHP. We didn’t take pictures of his license plate. I figured the guy woke up, no harm no foul,” Olivier said.

He said he had no motive for asking his wife to record this and has no position on self-driving vehicles. He just thought it was a very interesting and novel sight.

The video has since gone viral.
