Suspect steals BMW, leads Fresno police on high speed chase

A wild and dangerous chase through the streets of Fresno came to an end after the driver was arrested.

The chase happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday from the north side of Fresno into the downtown area. He was arrested at Divisadero and Echo. Police say he was driving at speeds up to 120 miles per hour.

Employees at the Fresno BMW dealership were moving cars on the lot near Palm and Herndon, when the suspect, described as a man in his 40’s, got into one of the SUV’s and took off.

The vehicle was spotted a half hour later at Blackstone and McKinley and that’s when a police chase began. When speeds reached 100 miles an hour on McKinley, officers backed off.

The police helicopter then followed the vehicle into the downtown area, with the suspect still driving way too fast.

“He was blowing red lights and stop signs at 100 mph but thankfully no one was injured. Again we were not following him because we did not want to push him to do anything more erratic than what he was already doing we did not want to endanger the public,” said Lt. Jennifer Horsford with Fresno Police.

The suspect finally abandoned the BMW at Divisidero and H streets and was taken into custody in the near-by neighborhood.

Police say the suspect is a parolee who was wanted for a domestic disturbance. They say the gun he had appears to be a replica gun.
