Madera police shot and killed a man who came at officers with a knife.

Police got a call of a DUI driver around 10:15 Thursday night. They say the driver left Highway 99 at Cleveland and crashed into another car. Police say the people in that car were not hurt and were safely removed from the scene.

The man killed was identifed Friday as Michael Robert Novak, 59.

Police say Novak refused to get out of his car. They say he became aggressive with the officers and produced a large knife from inside the vehicle. Police say he refused to drop the knife, got out of the car and charged at officers while holding the knife in front of him.

That’s when police say they shot and killed Novak.
