FRESNO, California (KSEE24 / CBS47) Flames engulfing Maplewood Apartments Sunday afternoon leaving many without a home. Fresno Fire is estimating 2.5 million dollars worth of damage.
Anne Marie Avellar with Triple A says tragedies like this is why every renter needs renters insurance.
“I really hope to god that they have insurance,” said Avellar.
She said approximately two thirds of people they service do not have renters insurance. That’s because a lot of apartment complexes in the valley simply do not require it.
“It’s surprising how many just over look it or think it’s not going to happen to them and don’t have it,” said Avellar.
In the state of California it is not required to have renters insurance. However, some apartment complexes require or highly recommend getting it.
Vanessa Ruiz Lived at Maplewood Apartments. She said she didn’t have renters insurance.
“My manager he was like get renters insurance. I didn’t get that,” said Ruiz.
Now Ruiz is out of her apartment and does not have insurance money to fall back on.
According to Allstate 65% of Americans ages 18 – 37 are renters and more than half do not have basic insurance.
“It’s very inexpensive and I try to encourage people when they buy their car insurance to kind of bundle it with the renters insurance,” said Avellar.
So, in this case the people who had renters insurance will end up paying a deductible. Then, they will get a check covering the remaining cost of their damage.
“Usually have a deductible between 250-500 if you have a claim,” said Avellar. “But, that’s a lot better than not having anything if something happens.”
