A human body part was found in a bag in the Kern River in the Bakersfield area on Sunday, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said.

Just before 6 p.m., a group of teens went swimming in the Kern River, just east of Hart Park.

The Sheriff’s Office said when the group discovered a bag that contained human remains, they called authorities.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with Kern County Park Rangers, arrived and confirmed it was a human body part. Officials were unable to say what type of body part was recovered.

Homicide detectives have assumed the investigation.

Anyone with information that could help in this investigation is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 861-3110 or the Secret Witness line at 322-4040.
