Special needs youth celebrate prom night in Fresno

News

A Fresno woman is making sure no one gets left out of a prom night experience.

Tatiana Freeland’s nonprofit ‘An Evening to Treasure’ hosted its third special needs prom tonight.

More than 1,500 people gathering at Northpointe Community Church where organizers and volunteers pulled out all the stops to make it an unforgettable night.

Attendees got celebrity treatment from start to finish.

“The red carpet is like I’m a rockstar,” Lili Bourgeois said Friday. She’s attending for the second time.

“It kind of dawned on me one day that my two younger sisters with special needs would not get the chance to go to prom and experience all of this,” Feeland said.

She started the organization two years ago for a senior class project, but the event is more Hollywood than homeroom.

“(Guests) get to come through and we do their hair and their makeup, we give them a tiara or a crown,” Freeland said.

Participants are decked out in outfits two weeks prior, then get dolled up on prom night. After primping, they’re picked up by a stretch limo complete with police escort. They walk the red carpet before dancing the night away.

Volunteers and dozens of businesses partner to make it an unforgettable night for everyone.

“This is a moment for parents too. We love watching our kids enjoy their first prom or a date or just things that all children or young adults are entitled to and look forward to,” Laura Bourgeois, Lili’s mom said.

The night is funded by sponsors and donations and completely free to guests.
