TULARE, California (KSEE/ KGPE) – The Tulare softball community is in mourning after losing one of their own.
Friends have confirmed to our stations that 28-year-old Jesus Marquez was shot and killed Saturday night, after their championship tournament.
Police say it happened around 11:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Prosperity Sports Park Complex, on west Prosperity Avenue and North E Street.
They say this is the fourth homicide in Tulare, this year.
Candles sit in the spot where friends say Marquez was tragically shot and killed.
They tell us he was widely known by his nickname, Chuy, and say he was loved by everyone.
Friends say Marquez had just finished playing in a softball tournament on field 4.
They say the parking lot was still packed with people as they were getting ready to leave.
Police say Marquez was shot multiple times.
Marquez’s friends say he’s been playing softball since childhood.
They say it’s a sport he truly loved and was a part of several teams.
Friends of Marquez say he was a father of two and say everyone gravitated toward him.
The community shocked by the tragedy.
“Never had anything like that all and it’s troubling,” says a man who frequents the sports complex to play basketball.
The man did not know Marquez but says it’s heartbreaking to know a young man’s life was taken at the place that is thought of as a safe place for families.
“It’s a really crowded area and I’m surprised to hear something like that happening,” he expressed.
Police say the motive is still under investigation. It’s unclear if there is anyone in custody, but friends tell us they believe there is.
