Two gang members are off the streets of Fresno after an undercover operation between MAGEC detectives and Homeland Security agents.
Officials made the arrests this afternoon at the intersection of Cedar and Kings Canyon Blvd.
Officers say two gang members were on one side of the intersection and two other rival gang members were on the opposite side. While on opposite sides of the street they began throwing gang signs and yelling at each other.
Officers say as one group of gang members began crossing the street one man pulled his backpack up to his chest and began reaching inside. Officers say it appeared the man was pulling out a gun.
Detectives quickly jumped in and made contact with the individuals. One of the suspects started running but was quickly detained. Another suspect resisted arrest and sustained minor injuries. Both suspects arrested are adult men, police say. Police say the suspect with the gun will face federal charges.
Officers found a loaded rifle inside the suspect’s backpack.
“He had in his backpack a loaded 22 inch rifle that’s been cut down to about 15 inches and had a 30 round magazine in it,” said Lt. McKnight.
Lt. Carl McKnight, with Fresno Police, says the work of the detectives helped prevent another shooting.
“If they hadn’t have been in the area, I have strong feeling that within 10 minutes we would have been responding to a victim of shooting over here,” Lt. McKnight stated. “Year to date–we had 101 shootings in city of Fresno as of Monday. This prevented it from being 102 shootings.”
MAGEC detectives made another gang arrest earlier today near Mayfair and Normal street. Police say that area is a big hotspot and officers are their daily.
