Rideshare drivers on alert after Lyft driver shot

The driver was shot after he just dropped off a rider

FRESNO, California (KSEE/KGPE) — A Lyft driver is recovering in the hospital after being shot early Sunday morning when three people tried to carjack him.

It happened around 3 a.m. in the area of Shields and Valentine avenues. Arriving officers found the victim, who told them the suspects approached his car after he just dropped off a rider.

Those three tried to steal his car and one of them pulled out a gun — shooting the victim. The victim also pulled out a gun and fired at least one round, according to Fresno Police.

“To hear that was here in Fresno, it’s just kind of sketch,” rideshare driver Shary Padilla said.

Padilla has been driving for both Uber and Lyft for around two years. For her, it’s a great gig.

“It’s fun and [I like] meeting new people,” she said.

She said she’s had a couple of bad rides, but nothing amounts to what happened in this crime.

Drivers and riders can’t carry guns while using either app, according to Uber and Lyft’s policies online. There are exceptions:

  • Uber lets you carry a gun if it’s unloaded and locked in a container in the trunk.
  • Lyft only lets authorized security personnel and law enforcement personnel carry guns.

To protect herself, Padilla said whenever she’s waiting for a rider, her doors are locked. She also always verifies the name of her rider before letting anyone inside of her car.

“I know that I’ve picked up people who’ve tried to steal other people’s rides, so, I always ask for their names,” she said.

Below is a statement Lyft sent in regard to the incident:

“What’s being reported is terrifying. While this incident did not occur on platform we have reached out to the driver to extend our support, and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”

The suspects are still on the run. If you know anything about this, please call Fresno Police immediately at (559)621-7000.
