President Trump is set to unveil a sweeping new immigration proposal today.
The adminstration says it is will emphasize skills and education instead of family
President Trump’s immigration proposal outlines border wall completion in 33 designated areas and scanning improvements at ports of entry
The plan’s main portion mandates immigrants pass a civics test…requires language skills and education levels…shifting to a merit-based system from the current family-based approach where green cards go to those with family ties.
The plan does not address the millions of immigrants already in the country “illegally”, the status of dreamers or touches on the deferred action child arrival program known as DACA…top priorities for democrats.
The president also wants to adjust the asylum process at the border where there’s a backlog and homeland security plan’s to deploy TSA agents to help with the migrant influx.

As for the president’s plan, lawmakers from both sides say it is unlikely to get through Congress.
Many Republicans acknowledge the plan is largely intended to be something they can pitch on the campaign trail.
