With thousands of votes still to count, Fresno Democrat TJ Cox declared victory in the race for California’s 21st Congressional District seat held by Republican Rep. David Valadao.

“I am elated to announce that we have won the election for California’s 21st Congressional District,” Cox said in a statement. “I want to thank my wife Kathy and our entire family for their love and support throughout this campaign. I could not have done this without them.”

A couple hours earlier, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee declared Cox the winner after Kings County updated its vote count.

With a little more than a 500-vote lead, and more than 20,000 votes left to count in the four counties District 21 represents, Cox thanked Valadao for his service in his victory statement.

“And I would like to thank Congressman David Valadao and his family for their six years of service to our country and the communities of the 21st District,” Cox said.

The election has to be certified by Dec. 7.
