Police standoff leads to school lockdown in Chowchilla

Suspect is now in custody

CHOWCHILLA, California - A man wanted by Fresno Police has been arrested in Chowchilla.

Officers responded to a home on Mariposa and 13th st., behind Chowchilla High School just after 3p.m. Today.

Police say the suspect is Brandon Coleman. Police say over the weekend in Fresno, Coleman shot at a woman's car with her inside. We're told she could be his girlfriend.

Because Coleman is on county parole, the Fresno Adult Compliance team took over the case. Around 2p.m. today Chowchilla Police, Madera Police, Madera County Sheriff's Office along with SWAT and Fresno ACT surrounded his home in Chowchilla.

It took about an hour and a half for Coleman to come out and cooperate. During the standoff, Chowchilla High School went on lockdown.

"It's our understanding that because there are weapons involved, that's why we put the school on lockdown. With the vicinity that we are with the residence to the school, we don't want to put any of the kids in danger and have something happen," said Lt. Jeff Palmer with the Chowchilla Police Department.

Coleman has been taken to the Fresno County Jail.

Chowchilla Police say there were at least five people inside the house with Coleman; they've been interviewed and some have been taken into custody.
