A manhunt is under way in Santa Clara County after two inmates escaped from a Palo Alto courthouse.

Police say Tramel Mcclough and John Bivins were at the courthouse for a hearing when they escaped.

Mcclough and Bivins – still dressed in prison orange – ran down the courthouse hallway and out the front door. They then jumped into a getaway car and took off.

Police say they abandoned the car a few blocks away and fled again in a U-Haul cargo van that was waiting for them.

A police spokesman described the escape as highly sophisticated and brazen. Authorities haven’t yet identified anyone who may have helped with the escape.

The two were reportedly being held without bail on armed robbery charges.
