Police search for suspect after softball player shot and killed in Tulare

News

TULARE, California (KSEE/ KGPE) – A softball tournament in Tulare ended in a deadly shooting. Police say they are searching for the person who shot and killed one of the players.

Friends say that 28-year-old Jesus “chuy” Marquez was shot Saturday night in the parking lot of the Prosperity Sports Park Complex, following a championship tournament.

Police tell us it’s still very early in the investigation, but say they are actively working the case.

They say no arrest have been made yet and are asking if anyone has information to come forward.

This park in Tulare is where Marquez played often. His sport of choice, friends say softball.

Marquez’s friends tell us he grew up playing and had a true love of the game. They say he was a part of several teams.

But sadly, the place where Marquez would spend his free time as part of a community league, would be the same place he would take his last breath.

Police say on Saturday night around 11:30 p.m., Marquez was shot and killed.

“The first officer on scene located the victim suffering from multiple gun shot wounds,” says Sgt. Eddie Hinojosa with the Tulare Police Department.

Friends say Marquez was shot in this parking lot right after their Championship game. They say many rushed to his side to help.

Police say he was transported to the hospital, where he died.

On Sunday night, a few of his teammates placed candles in the spot where friends say Marquez took his last breath.

They say he is a father of two and say everyone gravitated toward him.

Police say the motive is still under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the homicide is asked to contact the Tulare Police Department at (559) 684-4290.
