Police say unlicensed driver crashed car into apartment, displacing two people

A car crashes into a Fresno apartment with a handful of people inside. It happened after 6 P.M. Wednesday at the Butterfly Grove Apartments.

Police say a driver tried to park his car but hit a pole instead and went right through an apartment unit. Now two people are displaced.

This is what Rhonda Stuart’s bedroom looks like now. The wall smashed in by a black Toyota Scion with glass everywhere. Stuart says she’d usually be in that room studying. Luckily, not this time.

“Playing my game on my phone and that’s when I heard a crash,” said Stuart.

The roof that covers parking spaces is now sinking after fire officials say the driver hit a pole, trying to park before crashing into the apartment.

“Unfortunately the person wasn’t able to stop in time and obviously went into the bedroom,” said Frank Monterrosa with the Fresno Fire Department.

Rachelle Brownell and a few others were just hanging out inside Stuart’s apartment. She says everyone is still in shock after seeing the room totally destroyed.

“The window, everything, Her bedroom was all like, it was just crazy,” said Brownell.

Fire officials say there’s water and electrical damage too. Stuart and her son will stay in another apartment for the night. They’re not sure when they can come home. But who’s responsible? Fresno Police say the man behind the wheel isn’t licensed, making Stuart and her family even more angry at their current situation.

“For somebody who doesn’t have a license or license suspended or anything, they should know the law. They should know not to be driving, regardless,” said Brownell.

Police say the driver will be cited for not having a license. The damages are estimated to cost at least $20,000.
