Police say evidence links son to the murder of his mother

Joanne Keller and Matthew Keller both died from stab wounds Friday morning

FRESNO, Calif. - Neighbors react as police release the names and photos of a mother and son found dead at an apartment complex in Fresno. Police say they are 48-year-old Joanne Keller and 29-year-old Matthew Keller. They were found with stab wounds at the Casas Blancas apartment complex on Marks near Clinton.

Investigators say they are not searching for any suspects right now. They say all the evidence at this point links the son to the murder of his own mother.

A victim's family member ignored caution tape, going through authorities to find answers. Police say officers responded to the Casas Blancas Apartments just after 9:30 Friday morning. Residents reported a man yelling before collapsing to the ground outside of a unit. Authorities discovered 29-year-old Matthew Keller with stab wounds to the upper body. Inside the apartment, officers found the man's mother. 48-year-old Joanne Keller was stabbed multiple times. Medics provided first aid to both but they died at the scene.

"Homicide investigators were on scene because we did feel there was foul play," said Lieutenant Mark Hudson.

Investigators say witnesses heard a disturbance inside the Keller's apartment moments before mother and son died. Elvira Rangel came home from work to learn her neighbor had been killed.

"I saw her everyday. She was my neighbor. We spoke to each other. We greeted each other. I live upstairs. I usually sit in the balcony and greet people that go by. She was no trouble to anyone," said Rangel.

Right now, authorities say evidence ties Joanne Keller's son to her murder.

"I'm just really sad that she died in such a horrible way," said Rangel.

Relatives now stunned at the horrific loss of two family members...

"They're going through a lot of emotions. A lot. Because no one ever expects this to happen," said Rangel.

Investigators have not ruled this case as a murder-suicide. They say this is Fresno's 32nd murder of the year, meaning one has been added to the last count (31), not two.
