Police Prepare for Tower District Anti-hate Rally

Security measures are in place ahead of an anti-hate rally happening Saturday in the Tower District.

Organizers of the Counter Rally Against Hate said they are gathering in response to the violence that erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia and political rallies scheduled in the Bay Area that have since been canceled.

They anticipate a crowd of more than 500 people at the parking lot on Wishon and Olive to share a message of peace.

Organizers are hoping to keep their event free of the kind of clashes seen at rallies across the country.

“I know the type of people that come out to these type of things, I know the type of people who oppose these types of things and we’ve never had an issue,”said Elisa Rodriguez, event organizer.

Police say they expect it to be peaceful and said they’ve taken steps to keep it that way.

“We’ll have uniformed officers present there to make sure that everybody’s first amendment rights are protected,” said Lieutenant Mark Hudson.

Lt. Hudson said overtime has been approved to have extra officers on hand preventing the crowd from spilling into the streets and to make sure any counter protests don’t get out of hand.

“We have contingency plans for just incase something happens where police action is needed, however we don’t anticipate that at this rally at all,” he said.

Police also reached out to business owners, asking them to take extra precautions.

“We’ll be prepared to protect the business that we have here and our employees that work here,” said Denise Graziani, manager of Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater.

“We’re hoping for a great business return out of that but at the same time we just want to make sure that everybody is safe. that’s the most important thing,” said Louis Aguero Jr., Co-owner of Ritchie’s Pizza and Hot Dogs.
It was a sentiment echoed by Lt. Hudson.

“Uneventful, we certainly want an uneventful weekend and an uneventful rally,” he said.

Saturday’s rally is scheduled to start at 10 A.M.
