A northwest Fresno neighborhood is on high alert after police said a stranger tried luring a 12-year-old girl into his SUV.
This happened on Dovewood and Sycamore near Barstow and Grantland Friday morning.
The girl was heading to the bus stop when the man approached her.
“It’s very concerning, it’s very, very concerning,” said the girl’s father, Kevin Foster.
The incident happened just before 7 a.m. Friday.
“He asked, ‘do you want a lift?” said Foster. “She said ‘no.’ He said, ‘are you sure?'”
Foster said his daughter froze and the man turned the corner, and got closer to her, before demanding she get in the vehicle. Foster’s daughter took off running.
Police said the girl ran to the bus stop where there were other children.
A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured video of the suspect’s dark grey or black SUV drive by. It could also possibly be a Jeep Compass.
Fresno police hope the images will help lead detectives to the driver.
“We’re trying to figure out what we have. It could’ve been a possible kidnapping, it could’ve been something even far worse than that,” said Fresno Police Lieutenant Mark Hudson. “Right now, we want to get this person identified and off the streets if we can.”
“It was really shocking and surprising that it can happen in your own neighborhood,” said neighbor Karen Joyner.
Joyner said her son usually walks with the 12-year-old but that morning he was late.
From now on, Joyner said she’ll keep a closer eye.
“I will be driving him to school now, or at least driving him to the bus stop and I will watch him get on the bus,” said Joyner.
A frightening encounter that could’ve ended much worse.
“We believe that God protected her during that time, and one reason is, we pray for our kids every single morning for God’s protection,” said Foster.
The only description police have on the driver, is a white man. Police said there have been no other recent incidents in the area. Anyone with information should call Fresno PD or Crime Stoppers at 498-STOP.
