Passenger of Fresno shooting victim: ‘I’m surprised I’m still alive’

News

An update to breaking news, YourCentralValley now knows the name of the man who was shot and killed early Monday morning, near Harvard and Glenn in Fresno.

Police said Raul Cruz, 33, also known as Rodolfo Cruz, was on his way to work when he was killed. Police said this marks the 35th homicide of the year. Police said that’s up compared to 18 this time last year.

The woman who was a passenger to Cruz, did not want to show her face on camera or be identified, she was still in shock. She said what happened was scary but she’s thankful to be alive.

“I’m surprised I’m still alive today and I’m thankful because I have a daughter to live for,” the passenger

Police canvassed the neighborhood for several hours.

“Officers arrived made contact with a male shooting victim who sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” Sgt. Andre Benson, with Fresno Police Department, said.

What should have been a regular day heading to work for the woman passenger, turned a moment that was deadly.

“I was putting my cooler in the back when I see a van pull up next to us and started out of no where, I heard this popping sound and they start shooting him,” the woman said.

The woman said she and the victim worked together as field workers. She said for the last two months the victim would pick her and others up as part of a carpool.

“I wait for him every morning on the corner of Glenn and Harvard between 4:30 a.m. and 4:40 a.m. to go to work,” she said.

Police said the victim is from the Fresno area. The woman said he was in his 30’s and they never had a problem with him.

“He’s been respectful a serious person but respectful with all of us,” she said. “We got along in the fields and everything.”

She said it’s hard because she knew she was an easy target and is grateful to be alive.

“I’m so sorry for him but I hope he rests in peace, it’s hard but at least he’s with God now,” she said.

Fresno Police are urging if anyone has information on this case to contact them or CRIME STOPPERS at 498-STOP.
