Opening day for the Grizzlies and the impact it has on downtown businesses

April 05 2021 05:30 pm

It’s opening day here at Chukchansi Park and staff are putting in the final touches before gates open.

Fans from all over the valley lined up throughout the day to purchase opening day tickets.

Dylan Bourque is a Grizzlies fan. He says he and his friends are excited for opening day.

“Baseball in the valley is just the best thing especially having this good of a team here,” says Bourque. “The next pros are right here in Fresno. So, we get to watch them and there is nothing better than that.”

For downtown businesses like, Take 3, baseball season means more foot traffic downtown.

Desirae Washington is the general manager of Take 3. She says during baseball season more people come downtown to check out the dining scene and other businesses that have popped up on Fulton Street.

“It’s really important for people to support and come out,” says Washington. “For people to support the games but also the local businesses so we can keep this open.”

Washington says people supporting these businesses is key to downtown development.

“Downtown is suppose to be the heart of the city,” says Washington. “So, you know we really just want to bring more people down here.”

It’s an especially important night for companies like Tioga Sequoia Craft Brewery.

Michael Cruz is the President of Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company which is located right next to the ball park. Cruz expects a full house of thirsty baseball fans tonight and all weekend long.

“We expect a huge turn out for this week and we are excited to see our neighbors grow,” says Cruz. “They have really been the trail blazers for downtown.”

This is the first game at Chukchansi after they switched affiliation from the Houston Astros to the Washington Nationals.
