Surveillance video was instrumental in the arrest of Nick Kaul’s suspected killer. Many of those videos were from homes inside Fresno’s Old Fig Garden neighborhood.
“The Fig Garden neighbors are very proactive,” says Prudence Zalewski, a resident who acts as a liaison between the neighborhood and police.
She says her neighbors want to make it easier for investigators the next time their help is needed, by identifying the location of every surveillance camera in the area.
“We are in the process of constructing a map of all surveillance cameras,” says Zalewski. “We have an email chain. We want to do all we can. We want to work with law enforcement.”
“They have stepped up in a big way,” says Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims. “Not only for the donation and the reward, but in asking what they can do to help.”
Sheriff Mims says she appreciates the help, and Old Fig’s sense of community. She says it sends a clear message.
“This is our neighborhood, and we’re not going to give it up,” Mims says. “And we’re certainly not going to give it up to the criminals out there.”
