Two North Valley teens are accused of being in a car that struck a police officer in the bay area on Sunday.
The incident in Richmond was caught on camera and happened during a sideshow – a gathering where drivers perform stunts on a street. The officer was trying to break up the gathering when a car accelerated and he was hit. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering from broken bones and cuts.
Investigators say the suspect’s car was found abandoned a few hours later. The owner reported it stolen at a South San Francisco station. Police say that was a false report and the owner is actually the suspect.
Police later arrested 18-year-old Juan Vargas of Patterson. They believe he was the driver. He’s facing charges of Attempted Murder. His girlfriend, 18-year-old Genesis Diaz-Castaneda of Santa Nella was arrested on Suspicion of Conspiracy.
