Newspaper driver finds newborn baby in the middle of a Madera County road

A newborn baby girl is recovering at Valley Children’s Hospital after she was abandoned in the middle of a Madera County road.
According to Madera County Sheriff’s Office, an emergency call came in at 4:30 a.m., Monday morning for a reported abandoned infant in the roadway of Avenue 13 1/2 in Madera County.
The sheriff’s office said Aurelio Fuentes, from Madera, was out delivering newpapers when he found the baby lying on the road.
“You can tell they placed the baby there, they didn’t toss it. They just placed it there,” Fuentes said.
Fuentes said he noticed something laying on the road, he thought it was an animal and so he slowed down. As he approached, he heard the cries for help.
“I got a little more closer. I heard the baby crying and screaming,” Fuentes said.
Fuentes said the infant only wearing a onesie when he found him.
“You can see the umbilical cord attach to it, so this baby was barely born and I can’t tell for how long but it had feces leaking from it’s onesie,”  Fuentes said.
Fuentes said another person pulled over helping him with the infant as they waited for help, minutes later it was a California Highway Patrol deputy was the first to respond.
Just minutes before the incident, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said a hispanic female, possibly in her early 20’s driving a small white SUV approached a wan walking his dog in the area.
The woman asking him for help and asking him to take her baby.
The man telling the woman that there was a nearby fire station and a hospital nearby to take the infant.
“It’s very difficult too deal with this type of situation but we do want people who are in this mother situation that there are other options. Leaving a baby in the middle of the roadway was definetly not the best option. She should have taken it to a safe surrender site,” Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue said.
The infant is being treated at Valley Children’s Hospital and is listed in good condition.
