Miss California contestants meet in Fresno for orientation

FRESNO, Calif. - Young women from around the state gathered in Fresno this weekend for orientation in the Miss California competition.

"For me, literally living a dream I set for myself 17 years ago," said Miss California 2017, Jillian Smith.

Smith, who earned Miss California 2017, is getting ready to hand off her crown to the next young woman. 

"It's bittersweet, you know when you get the job, you only have it for a year, so I'm excited for the next girl," said Smith. 

There rae close to 90 contestant including teen girls who are representing various cities and counties across the state. They're all vying for Miss California 2018 which is announced June 30th. With just weeks away, the young women are now in Fresno getting ready for the big competition.

"It's the girls kind of learning the job of Miss California and getting ready to know what thye're competing for," Smith said. 

Smith said the young women are attending workshops to learn interviewing, and social media skills. They're meeting with sponsors and getting fitted for swimsuits. Smith said the event is also about bonding. 

"These girls are really supporting each other, you're not competing against each other, you're competing against yourself," Smith added.
