Merced County hazmat team responds to barrel labeled ‘corrosive’ left on a sidewalk

MERCED COUNTY, California (KSEE/KGPE) – The Merced County Fire Department hazmat team responded to a potentially dangerous situation Sunday when a barrel of liquid labeled “corrosive” was found on the sidewalk.

At around 12:30 p.m., the hazmat team assisted the Atwater City Fire Department at Bellevue Road and Constitution Drive to assess the 15-gallon container that was reported by a passerby.

It took about an hour to retrieve a sample and identify the product as sodium hypochlorite.

There were no injuries reported from residents or personnel.
