Marie Callender’s files bankruptcy, closing 19 locations, including the only two in Fresno

On Monday, Marie Callender’s Restaurant & Bakery confirmed that they have closed the doors to both Fresno locations, permanently.

The company announced it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closing locations that it says were not performing well, including Fresno’s two restaurants.

The news came as a surprise for workers and customers.

We spoke with a few employees, they tell us they were given no warning.

Some showed up to work and found out, others say they got a phone call on Monday morning, managers telling them the news.

Customer, after customer walked up to Marie Callender’s on Blackstone, in Fresno, near Riverpark and left confused after reading this sign on the door.

“I’m so sad that they’re not open, you know, we love their food, especially their cornbread, I was looking forward to that,” says Linda White, a customer.

It’s not a day employees or customers saw coming. “We have to close the restaurant,” says an employee. “Permanently?” asked a customer. “Yes,” the employee responded.

The place known for it’s tasty pies, closed the doors at both Fresno locations.

Those who showed up to grab a bite to eat and grab a slice a pie taken by surprise.

“I was completely shocked, I haven’t heard anything about Marie Callender’s being in big trouble, it’s certainly not a sign of a booming economy,” says Mary Luck, a customer.

Luck was meeting her book club at the Cedar and Shaw Marie Callender’s location.

She says once a month, for the last year, that’s where they meet.

“Seemingly a pretty good crowd whenever we came on Monday mornings,” Luck expressed.

But sadly that crowd, was not big enough. The company says they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed 19 underperforming locations, including the two in Fresno.

Because of that, we were told about 60 employees from both locations are left without a job.

“It’s terrible for the employees, I feel really sorry for them,” White expressed.

Longtime customers say both the employees and pies will be missed.

“They were certainly wonderful and they were a treat,” says Luck.

The Marie Callender’s in Visalia will remain open. It’s now the only location left in the Valley.

We were told employees can apply there if a position is available.
