Man killed in officer-involved shooting near Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – An officer-involved shooting occurred at about 5 a.m. Friday morning on northbound I-5 near Highway 43, near Buttonwillow.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, two CHP officers responded to a single-vehicle accident. The car crashed into a light pole, completely knocking it over.

Officers say the driver started walking toward officers and claimed he had a gun. They told him to stop, but he continued to approach.

That’s when officers opened fire.

“The subject claimed they had a firearm, approached officers, did not obey, appeared to have his hand concealed as well, and at that time the OIS occurred,” said KCSO public information officer Angela Monroe.

The man died at the scene and has not been identified at this time.

“Again, this happened before 5 a.m., so definitely was still very dark out at this time. We’re still early in the investigation,” Monroe added.

CHP has not confirmed if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
