Madera student struck by drunk driver while waiting at bus stop

News

A student at Madera South High School was injured after officials say he was struck by a drunk driver while waiting at a school bus stop.

The victim’s parents say 17-year-old Benito Caval Fermin is at CRMC. He’s expected to make a full recovery. But according to CHP, the suspect who hit him with his car should have never been on the road.

“It could have been avoided if he was just not impaired,” said Officer Gregorio Rodriguez with CHP.

The incident happened Monday morning.

Madera Unified says the student was airlifted to Fresno Community Hospital where he is receiving medical attention.

The suspected drunk driver, 23-year-old Manuel Morales Rosales, was arrested.

The school district is providing counseling services to all students affected by the incident.

“It’s gonna be very traumatic for the mom. She’s gonna relive this every day of her life until the young man even when he gets older. She’s gonna remember as well as walking her child. A couple seconds before or after, it could have been a major, major tragedy,” said Rodriguez.
