Madera Police: Man’s body found in burned vehicle

Madera Police and firefighters discovered a body inside a burning car on Tuesday. 

The fire was reported just after midnight at the corner of Baron Street and Liberty Lane. 

According to police, the victim identified as Luis Echervarria, 33, Madera had left a friend’s house after he had been drinking, they believe he fell asleep inside the car, while the vehicle was running. 

An arson investigator and the Department Of Justice were called in to help the Madera Police Department with this case. 

Investigators believe the fire had started under the hood of the black BMW. 

“In looking at the vehicle, the arson investigator believed that the vehicle fire in the vehicle started in the engine compartment and than moved into the passenger compartment of the vehicle,” Madera Police Sargeant Mark Trukki said. 

Investigators said there’s no evidence of foul play. 

“It’s a sad situation,” Pedro Roque said. 

Roque’s home surviellance system captured the fire on video. 

In the video, you can see smoke coming out from under the car hood, than a large glow starts to appear. 

“It started small and than it just blew up to a big flame. The whole front of the vehicle was on fire,” Roque said. 

The vehicle was towed to the Madera Police Department to conduct further testing to see what started the fire inside the engine compartment. 

Police believe the man might have died from smoke inhalation, an autopsy will be performed on the victim, to determine the exact cause of death.
