FRESNO, California (KSEE/KGPE) – Firefighters battled a major, three-alarm apartment fire Sunday night, displacing at least 7 families.

The fire broke out just after 7 p.m. Sunday at Shaw and Backer avenues.

Fresno Fire Department officials say the fire seemingly started in the car port area and spread to the units at the MapleWood Apartments.

At least 50 firefighters battled the blaze, and off-duty and Clovis Fire crews were also requested to help knock the fire down.

All residents were evacuated from the fire and are accounted for.

Some issues crews ran into while fighting the fire were people coming to the scene to watch the fire, a hydrant not having an adequate flow and the heat draining the crews at a higher rate.

Crews are expected to be at the scene throughout the night putting out smaller fires that continue to burn.

Fresno State released a statement shortly after the fire broke out, offering students who are directly affected assistance.
