TeamSmile says their goal is not only to provide free dental services, but to educate the youth on the importance of preventative dental care.
Ten-year-old Braden is just one of many kids getting his pearly whites cared for by one of many dentists during the twelfth annual TeamSmile event at Fresno State on Saturday.
And it’s at no expense for those between the ages of six and 18.
“It’s such an encouragement to know that people give their time to provide this for people who don’t have the means, or don’t have dental insurance,” says Braden’s mother, Elvira Clay.
Clay says with five kids, the medical bills can pile up when it comes to dental care.
So, she says events like this are a “blessing.”
She added, “I just know it’s important for them to take care of their teeth and be examined by professionals.”
Dr. Xavier Gutierrez, lead dentist for TeamSmile said, “This program is set up to help any kids who don’t have dental coverage or dental care.”
TeamSmile does it all.
From cleanings and fillings to extractions and X-rays.
Gutierrez says each year in the US, about 52 million school hours are lost due to dental pain.
“So that tells us there’s a great need,” he says. Adding, “So, how cool would it be to get our kids out of pain and keep them in the classroom at the same time.”
Something Braden gives two thumbs up.
“(I’m) really happy I didn’t even feel the cavity,” he says. “Now I know it’s there, but now it’s gone.”
