Sixth grader wins FUSD Elementary School Spelling Bee, advancing to country-wide competition

Local News

Dozens of local students gave their best shot at the Fresno Unified Elementary Spelling Bee.

The district says the competition grows every year. Thirty-one schools participated, compared with just 20 back in 2015.

On Tuesday, spellers in grades four through six took the stage at Fresno High School.

“It’s a very on-the-edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting kind of day but it’s a fun day too. There has to be a champion, but you want to see them all win because they’re all so wonderful,” says Janie De La Cerda, a Fresno Unified employee.

We want to congratulate the new Fresno Unified Spelling Bee champ, Jacob Hernandez. He’s a sixth grader at Manchester G.A.T.E. Elementary.

He advances to the countywide spelling bee, which will be held next month at Fresno State.
