Search underway for a man who went missing in the Merced River, deputies say

Local News

MERCED COUNTY, California (KSEE/KGPE) – The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Water Rescue and Recovery Team is searching for a man who possibly drowned in the Merced River Sunday afternoon.

His friend said the man walked his horse into the water at a depth that caused the horse to start swimming. It’s unclear if he either jumped or fell off of his horse, but either way, he went under water and hasn’t been seen since, the sheriff’s office explains.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Water Rescue and Recovery Team are searching the river near Santa Fe Drive and areas down stream.

The search was called off for Sunday night, and the sheriff’s office spokesperson says efforts are expected to continue Monday.
