One person was killed crossing Highway 99 in Tulare County early Wednesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

Just after midnight, the Fresno Communications Center received a call of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian on northbound Highway 99 in between Avenues 76 and 72.

Officers from CHP’s Visalia Area Office were dispatched to the scene.

The initial investigation found that around 12:02 a.m., a woman from Clovis was driving a 2015 Honda north on Highway 99 south of Avenue 76.

At the same time just north of the Honda, a pedestrian was crossing the center median and began to cross in an easterly direction into lanes of traffic, CHP said.

In an attempt to avoid the pedestrian, the driver swerved and applied her brakes.

The front of the Honda collided with the pedestrian causing major injuries, CHP said. The pedestrian, a 59-year-old man from Pixley, died at the scene.

The driver of the Honda did not suffer any injuries as a result of this collision.

Due to the collision, traffic on northbound Highway 99 was diverted off at Avenue 72 and back onto the freeway north of Avenue 80 for about two hours.

The pedestrian has not been identified.
