FRESNO, California (KGPE) – It’s opening day for the Tulare County Fair.
They are celebrating 100 years of family-filled fun.
More than a hundred thousand people are expected to attend the 5-day event.
The fair took some major security steps, implementing new measures to keep fair-goers safe.
For the first time ever when you get to one of the four entrances, you’ll walk through one of these metal detectors and there’s also a security team with hand held security wands.
While it may take an extra minute or two, those we spoke with say it’s worth it.
It’s that time of year again, fried foods, carnival games and rides.
While thousands are enjoying opening day at the Tulare County Fair, safety is top priority.
It’s the first time ever the fair has had this strong of a security presence.
“We have four metal detectors and wanders at every gate, including our livestock gate and their perimeter gates,” says Pamela Fyock, CEO of the Tulare County Fair.
Fyock says the board took major steps to ensure safety after the Gilroy shooting.
“The more value we can add and the more safety features we have in place to ensure families that where very very safe,” she explained.
Fairgoers we spoke with say they feel good about the new security measures in place and feel safe seeing law enforcement walk the fairgrounds.
“I like that they’re going beyond, above and beyond for us, our safety,” says Valerie Franco, a Tulare resident.
And parents are taking extra steps too.
“We just had this talk in the car didn’t we guys, or any sound that you hear or something suspicious just leave, don’t stay around,” says Richann Oliveira, a Visalia resident who’s attending the fair with her son and his friend.
This marks 100 years of celebration of the Tulare County Fair.
They have a new entertainment stage with some great performances throughout the week.
There’s also Pioneer Village with history of the fair and very cool butter sculpture display.
The fair runs until Sunday.
